🎵 Music at Firwood 🎵
Inspiring creativity, confidence, and connection through music
At Firwood, music is for everyone. Whether it's singing in the choir, exploring instruments, taking part in live performances, or simply feeling the beat in a drumming session, music brings our school to life. It plays a key role in developing confidence, supporting emotional wellbeing, and giving every student the chance to shine.
🎼 Music in the Curriculum
Music is taught weekly as part of our Enrichment Curriculum for students in Key Stages 3 and 4. Lessons are inclusive and accessible, tailored to meet the needs of all learners, including those with sensory and complex needs. For our sensory learners, music is a key part of the Thrive Curriculum, supporting communication, engagement, and emotional regulation.
In the sixth form, students can achieve a nationally recognised Arts Award, while in Key Stage 4, music forms part of the ASDAN Certificate of Personal Development. These opportunities give students the chance to gain accreditation, explore their creativity, and build lifelong skills.
🎤 Music Beyond the Classroom
We’re proud to offer a wide range of co-curricular music opportunities. Our weekly choir is open to everyone and regularly performs at events like the SENDi Conference in Bolton. The choir also leads our singing assemblies, bringing our whole school together through the power of music.
Every Thursday, our lunchtime music club welcomes students from all key stages and pathways. It’s a relaxed and creative space where students can explore instruments, collaborate, and express themselves through sound.
🎶 Live Music and Experiences
Firwood students regularly enjoy live music—whether it's performing on stage at Victoria Halls in Bolton with the Bolton Music Service or taking part in school-wide events like Firfest, our Winter Wonderland, and the Christmas Fair. Music brings our community together and helps students build confidence, teamwork, and joy.
We also offer weekly music therapy sessions for students who benefit from therapeutic support. In the sixth form, our popular Desktop Drumming sessions are part of the Health & Wellbeing curriculum, helping students stay active, focused, and expressive.
🌟 Supporting Growth and Talent
Whether a student simply enjoys tapping a beat or dreams of performing, we support every young person to grow their musical talents and interests. Music helps students with their personal development, encourages positive behaviour and attitudes, and introduces pathways to creative careers.
At Firwood, music isn’t just a subject—it’s a celebration of who we are.
